In 2010 the downtown White Salmon crosswalks underwent a radical transformation thanks to Community Partners volunteers. Since then pedestrians have walked safely among a school of huge white salmon as they cross the street in the downtown area.
This is the brainchild of Celynn Vandeventer who researched the legalities. Past-Councilman Anthony Coulter helped obtain approval for the changes to a state highway. The downtown business owners chipped in for materials and Lloyd DeKay made the painting template. Then Lloyd, Don Tackley and Greg Bargabus helped the City’s Public Works Department do the actual painting under the direction of Tommy Smith, Deputy Director of Public Works.
Several existing crosswalks were repainted and more can be added as needed to help make our town a safer place to visit and work. This is all part of the efforts of Community Partners to help guide the city toward a new prosperity. If you want to help with these efforts you can sign up to volunteer with Community Partners at WSCommunityPartners.org.
