Klickitat County Recycling Changes

Republic Services has updated their plastics recycling in Klickitat County. Effective November 1st, you no longer need to look for numbers on the bottom of your containers. All plastics that fall into the "bottles, jugs, or tubs" categories are accepted. All other accepted materials remain the same. Plastic bottles are those containers that have a narrow neck, no handle, and a lid. Use primarily for storing liquids. Jugs are large containers that typically have a narrow neck, a handle, and a lid. Used primarily for storing liquids. Tubs are containers that open-top circular or oblong. Used primarily for storing food products such as butter, peanut butter, cottage cheese, coffee, nuts, etc. Lids that can be securely attached are also accepted. If the lids can easily fall off, remove and discard them in the trash as loose lids are a hazard to the recycling machines. Also do not forget to pour out all liquids, scrape out the food, rinse and wipe out any food residue and let it dry before placing it in your recycling bag.

Although more plastic is being accepted, please remember that the most positive impact you can make is by reducing the waste you create in the first place. One way to do that is through your purchasing habits. Choose to reuse the items you already have, buy used instead of new, use reusable, and refuse single-use plastics whenever possible.
